Despite how safe any urban location is generally, there are nearly always some areas that are less desirable or even sometimes dangerous at night. NJ is no different. In the US, the widening gap between rich and poor, and other worsening social factors means that there are some distinct places that have challenging social, and law & order issues. The combination of drug dealing and criminal activity in these areas, sometimes with gun involvement, makes these places unsafe. Such locations occur in nearly every American state, although in New Jersey, less often than average. Even so, there are a small number of places that warrant extra care.
While in total this is only a small portion of New Jersey, it is best to play it safe, and avoid these particular areas, at least during night times.
